Amos
Amo_5:8
The fingerprints of God are all over the world. The fact that He created and sustains the world is very evident in everything we see around us. Even in the stars and the constellations we can see the evidence of God. Natural selection or evolution is not the name of God. “The Lord is his name.” (Compare with Job_9:9 and Job_38:31) TRS
Amo_5:21-27
What God desires is worship with judgment and righteousness rather than songs, sacrifices, and rituals of worship without true repentance and consecration to God. So many people just go through the motions of “church-ianity.” We go to church. We sing our Christian songs. We look and act like we love the Lord, but our hypocrisy, pride, and selfishness makes God sick. Instead of worshipping God in spirit and in truth, we worship “great” men, nice church buildings, the almighty dollar, fancy cars, expensive homes, our comfort, and our children. We are Christians only when it is convenient and does not require judgment of sin and living in righteousness. Verse 24 should be our desire, that “judgment would run down as waters; and righteousness as a might stream.” Let us judge ourselves, so that God will not have to judge us. (Amo_5:27, 1Co_11:31) TRS
Amo_7:14-15
If the world is going to be reached with the gospel, people from all walks of life must head God’s call. Farmers, shepherds, businessmen, athletes, secretaries, and others to whom God speaks must be willing to leave behind their jobs, homes, and families in order for us to evangelize the world. Abraham was a shepherd. Elisha was a farmer. Amos was a gatherer of sycamore fruit. Jesus was a carpenter. Paul was a tentmaker. William Carey was a cobbler. D.L. Moody was a shoe salesman. Sometimes people use their job or the fact that they are not a prophet or the son of a prophet as an excuse, but that may be the very reason why God is calling them. Some of the greatest preachers and men of God did not come from a well-known family, a great educational background, or a the home of a preacher, but God is just looking for people who realize they are nothing but are willing to obey Him. Amo_8:11-12
The famine we have today is not one of food or water but of hearing the word of the Lord. People are wandering from one church to the next, but they are not able to find the word of God preached. What people need is not always what they want. What they need to hear is, “Thus saith the Lord.” God give us men who will preach the Word. TRS |
