Psalms
Psa_2:8
This is a promise from the Father to the Son. He is not the God of the Jews and Israel alone but the God of the heathen also. The Son is told to ask and God will give him the uttermost parts of the earth for His possession. Satan will later tempt Him by offering Him what God has already promised Him if He will but bow down to him.
The thought that comes to me is how we should be asking the heathen for an inheritance for Him. It is our privilege and responsibility to honor our God and King by taking the gospel to them. They are His but they must repent and be saved. To believe and be saved they need to hear the Word of God. Are you interested in taking the gospel to them? Are you interested in honoring our God by getting Him all of this for an inheritance? He will be glorified. I just want a part in what He is going to do and I want to help honor Him because of all that He has done for me. WAG
Psa_3:3
“The Lord is a shield and the lifter up of mine head”. When we seem to be compassed about by the enemy, when it seems as if everyone is against us; maybe everything seems to be going wrong (vs.2), we can remember that the Lord is our shield. When we can’t defend ourselves, He is there as our shield to defend us. When we are discouraged He is the lifter up of our head. Our hope must be in the Lord. One of the greatest dangers in the work of the Lord is fear and discouragement but when we confide in Him though we be surrounded by ten thousand of the enemy we need not be afraid. (vs.6) KTW
Psa_4:8
We can always have confidence in the Lord. There are many things in our lives that can cause us to worry and worry can ruin our ministry. Many have allowed worry to consume them to the point of paranoia. Especially on the mission field with culture shock and a very unfamiliar environment it is very easy to allow yourself to worry. Although there are many things in our lives that we cannot control we can confide in the fact that the Lord has set the godly apart for himself (vs.3) and that when we trust in Him we can sleep in peace knowing that we dwell in safety. KTW
Psa_8:1
Is His name Excellent in all the Earth? What have we done to make it excellent in all the Earth? His name without a doubt is excellent but I gather from this verse that He wants His name spread throughout all the Earth.
His name was not just a name for the Jews. He was not just the God of the Israelites. He wants the world to know His name that is above every name. We are commanded to take His name to the world. WAG
Psa_8:3-4 Mankind is consumed with the pursuit of answering the question, "Where did I come from?" Yet, the Bible speaks only briefly of the creation of man. The full account, as given in Genesis, is contained in two brief chapters. God's account of creating the stars is summed up with five words, "He made the stars also) (Gen. 1:16). According to Psalm 8, verse 3, the creating of the universe was merely the "work of thy fingers." Amazing! The very thing that has caused man to devote countless hours and invest untold billions into its research, is simply finger-work with God. What an awesome and powerful God we serve!
This causes much contemplation upon Psalm 8, verse 4. When considered in contrast, it is amazing to David that the infinite Creator of the universe could give any thought to mortal man. Man, which is nothing but dirt (Gen. 2), is the crowning creation of God! God gives to man the supremacy over the rest of His creation (Psa. 8:5-8). It is all by His design and by His grace.
Therefore, how can man be so prideful? Man's appointments are nothing of his own but, rather, a Divine allotment from God Himself. This is overwhelming to David! He writes, "What is man, that thou are mindful of him?" The word "mindful" is the Hebrew word that means "to mark, or to remember." The mighty God of Heaven wants to remember mortal man. Why? It is certainly not because of man's accomplishments, for everything he has was appointed to him by God. It is certainly not because of his superior ranking, for he is still a "little lower than the angels." No, the answer to "why" is simply because man is the object of God's love (MOW)
Psa_8:9
Adam Clark says the following in his commentary on this verse:
The name of JESUS is celebrated in almost every part of the habitable globe; for his Gospel has been preached, or is in the progress of being preached, through the whole world. Bibles and missionaries are now carrying his name, and proclaiming his fame, to the utmost nations of the earth.
I beg to differ with him. Currently the majority of the world does not know and we are not carrying His gospel throughout the entire world. Actually we are prohibited from taking the gospel to many parts of the world. We must work to change that. WAG
Psa_9:11
What people did He want them to declare His doings among? I believe that even back in the Old Testament God was dealing with His nation, His people to declare His doings to all the world. Here is the Great Commission in the Old Testament and for the Jews. They failed to concern themselves with others and God put them on a shelve. What are we doing right now to declare His doings among people? WAG
Psa_12:2
What does our conversation consist of? Do we speak vanity with our neighbors? We have good news to tell and share yet we spend our time flattering ourselves and speaking with a double heart. Why do we not find out what message we have to discuss and turn our discussions from politics, weather and sports to the eternal destiny of souls all over the world? WAG
Psa_36:4
What do Godly people devise on their bed? WAG
Psa_38:13
As they spoke evil he was as a deaf and dumb man. He did not hear and neither did he respond. There is a good lesson for the missionary or disciple trainer. Often times you will be misunderstood and people will criticize. Be careful not to hear or speak. Let God take care of you. WAG
Psa_39:6
Like the old country preacher said: "Be a doing your giving while you're a living so you'll be a knowing where your stuffs a going” God gives to us to give to His work, not to heap up in a vain shew. WAG
Psa_40:1
In times of trouble we must realize that the Lord is on our side. When we would rather take things into our own hands we must realize that the He is in control and the best thing that we can do is patiently wait upon the Lord. Many times when someone does us wrong or betrays us we want to fix the problem or set them straight but we should do as the Lord commands and pray for our enemies. When we patiently wait upon the Lord, many times He can fix the problem without us having to do anything. Just as with David, he had the opportunity to take Saul’s life and fix the problem. This would have only made things worse but when he left it in the Lord’s hands He worked it out, and David took his rightful place as King. KTW
Psa_40:2
Praise the Lord that the day He saved our soul he set our feet on the solid rock that is Jesus Christ. Our life before was nothing more than a horrible pit, the miry clay, a life without direction and purpose. When we trusted Jesus Christ as our Savior he established our goings and gave us purpose of life. He put a new song and message in our mouth, the message of salvation (vs.3). Now we can focus on what He has given us to do, take the gospel to a lost and dying world. When the world sees the difference in our lives and hears the message of salvation they will fear and trust in the Lord (vs.3). KTW
Psa_41:1
God blesses and makes happy those who consider the poor. What poverty should most move you—economic poverty or spiritual poverty. We should hurt for them. We should desire to see many people have help in their poverty. But more so we should be concerned about the amount of spiritual light that they have. Do they have a Bible, a preacher, a church, a spiritual heritage, etc? WAG
Psa_48:10
Thy praise unto the ends of the earth! I find it interesting that David speaks of God, His praise, and the ends of the earth all in one sentence. Apparently it is not a new idea that the uttermost or the ends of the earth would know of our God. Somehow we must get the burden of having the praise of our God sung all over the world. We must be concerned that we as His people get the gospel to the world. According to thy name -- so -- is this to happen. We all believe that His name is great and that it should be extended to the ends of the earth. The only question is what are we doing to bring that about? WAG
Psa_53:2
There are many around the world that are looking for something. They may even believe there is a God but have no idea how to reach Him. Some worship God through rituals and strange practices. Others follow traditions that were passed down from generation to generation in their religious congregations. As God looks down from heaven He sees those around the world that desire a relationship with Him but the problem is there is no one to tell them. Many perhaps hear as the Apostle Paul the Macedonian call but the pull of the world or some other selfish desire keeps them from answering and many continue in their lost condition because we fail to see as God sees. KTW
Psa_64:2
What would happen if the righteous were to have a secret counsel?
1. In the meeting we prepare our tongues and minds to shoot out blessing words. 3
2. In the meeting we pray so that we can preach and go without fear 4
3. In the meeting we encourage each other in the right matters 5
4. We discuss preparing ways to reach the world and even go into countries were we will have to work without being seen. 5
5. What if in our meeting we were to search out good works using a diligent search of every one of us. 6
6. What if we worked at becoming deep thinkers to see what we can do for God. 6 WAG
Psa_68:6 Verse 6 states, "God setteth the solitary in families." It reminds me that with God, you are never alone! God's work sometimes may seem lonely, but it never really that way. For those who are lonely, God desires to be their companion. For those who feel bound, God wants to be their freedom (Psa. 68:6b, "he bringeth out those which are bound with chains." (MOW)
Psa_68:11
Just how great is the company of those that publish His word. We must work to increase the size of the company that are concerned about getting the gospel to the world. WAG
Psa_72:19
As the psalmist blesses the Lord and sings his praises he states that he would like to have the whole world filled with the glory of the Lord. I wonder how much our hearts beat to get that done. I wonder how many times in our personal and public worship we consider this a goal of our lives. Should it be our concern or was he just preaching. Should we attempt to fill the world with his praise and glory? I think so. WAG
Psa_73:1
In verse 3 the psalmist is envious of the prosperity of the wicked. Then he noticed the cost of their riches.
1. Verse 6: They wear a chain of pride. Even so that they speak against God in v.9.
2. Verse 6: They wear a garment of violence.
3. Verse 7: They have hit the saturation point of pleasure insomuch as it takes continually more to satisfy them.
4. Verse 8: They find less and less people at their level. They are condescending.
5. Verse 11: Complete ignorance about God.
6. Verse 17: They stand on a slippery slope. Destruction is at the bottom.
7. Verse 19: Desolation is only moments away from their pleasures.
8. Verse 19: Since a rich man's wealth is his strong city, when they are gone, he is consumed with terror having no other resources to rescue him.
In verse 21-22 the psalmist felt foolish for envying riches at such a high cost. JDP
Psa_73:28
As the psalmist gets close to God he declares all God’s work. I wonder why we do not declare his works. Could it be that we are spending much time in his presence 73:23, not so in love with him 73:25 maybe we do not find strength in him every day 73:26, maybe we aren’t drawing near to him 73:28. WAG
Psa_78:4
How important it is as a missionary that we care for the spiritual welfare of our family. It is our responsibility to teach them and pass on to them the spiritual heritage that we have received from the Lord. In Psalms 78 we see that the law, or the word of God is being presented and in vs.4 it that we should not hide the law from our children but should pass it on to the next generation. The result of teaching them the word is that they (vs.7) might set their hope in God and keep His commandments and not be as many were who disobeyed. How important is it that we teach our children the word of God. More important than anything we can do in the ministry is prepare our family to be godly followers of Christ that will pass on their heritage to their family and the following generation. KTW
Psa_78:9
Will you turn back in the day of battle? The children of Ephraim were armed and had bows. They were physically prepared for battle. I am sure that they had prepared and had talked about it but when it came time for the battle they weren’t ready. How many Christians turn back when it is time to witness or speak up for Jesus? How many quit on God when things get a little tough. How many have learned to sing the songs, carry the bible and say amen but cant take it when the devil turns up the heat. Maybe you should get in the battle down on a smaller scale. Step out and find someone that you can talk to about the lord and salvation, pray and ask God for big things, begin discipling someone, take a stand for right even when it isn’t popular. Do more than just testify in your church. WAG
Psa_78:33
How are your days being consumed? As I get older I know that I do not want to waste the life that God has given me. I do not want to have to be disciplined of God for him to get my attention. I want to serve him from my heart. I want to know that my life has a purpose and is accomplishing something for him. When it is all said and done what will you have accomplish. Can you point and someone and say that you definitely influenced their life for eternity. Can you name someone that you have lead to Christ, trained and discipled to serve God? How are you using the life He has given you? WAG
Psa_81:11 God's people will have none of Him and yet there are people all over the world that have never had the opportunity to accept or reject our God. We have never even carried the gospel to them. What a shame that the same people reject the gospel over and over while others never even have a chance to hear. WAG
Psa_96:1-3 Sing the message of salvation to all people
It is God’s desire that all the earth sing unto Him, and bless His name. It says we are to show forth his salvation from day to day. These verses are not talking to those who are on staff at a church, or even those in the ministry on the mission field. These verses are talking to every single Christian and the Bible says that we should sing forth and declare his salvation to the heathen among all people. God desires that the entire world know about him and what he did for them on the cross. Our God is great and deserves all the praise we can bring unto his name. JAH
Psa_98:2
He hath made known His salvation--He openly shewed his righteousness in the sight of the heathen. It would appear that God wants to make know His salvation. He is concerned about the salvation of the world. It is about time that we also got concerned about how to get the gospel message to the world. WAG
Psa_101:3
What a holy hatred! He hated those the work of those that turn aside. This is the hatred that is needed today. Over the years we see so many that become castaways. 1Co_9:27 They start out well. It is better not to boast when you put on your armour but rather boast when the battle is over and you can take it off. 1Ki_20:11 Today develop a love for staying in the work, for being faithful to Him, His Word, His work, all of your life. Do not be one of those that turn aside. Yes there will be great difficulties, pressures, and problems just be sure to get alone with God and get the strength you need to keep going for Him. WAG
Psa_102:20
God looks down from his sanctuary to behold the earth. Psa 102:19. He hears the groaning of the prisoners those who are appointed unto death. John 3:18 Do you not believe that we His servants should not hear and desire to loose those that are appointed to death. The cries ascend up to heaven from all over the earth. Thousands are chained in atheistic countries as well as Muslim countries. They need a preacher. Many are chained prisoners in countries full of religion but no knowledge of the Savior or how to get to Him. Hear and loose that is the command from this verse I believe. WAG
Psa_103:21
Whose pleasure do you do with your life? Some say to each his own but God wants you to do his pleasure. You were created for his pleasure Colossians 1:16. What pleases you? What pleases him? Does he want the world to know what Jesus did on the cross? What were we to pray in the model prayer—would that be what he wants—Hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done Matthew 6:9. WAG
What about the Call?
Psalm 103:21 Amos 7:14-15
"'Not called!' did you say? ‘Not heard the call,' I think you should say. Put your ear down to the Bible, and hear Him bid you go and pull sinners out of the fire of sin. Put your ear down to the burdened, agonized heart of humanity, and listen to its pitiful wail for help. Go stand by the gates of hell, and hear the damned entreat you to go to their father's house and bid their brothers and sisters and servants and masters not to come there. Then look Christ in the face -- whose mercy you have professed to obey -- and tell Him whether you will join heart and soul and body and circumstances in the march to publish His mercy to the world.”
-- William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army
Jim Elliot once said, “We do not need a call to get involved in world missions – we need a good swift kick in the pants.”
"It will not do to say that you have no special call to go to China. With these facts before you and with the command of the Lord Jesus to go and preach the gospel to every creature, you need rather to ascertain whether you have a special call to stay at home."-- J. Hudson Taylor

Psa_108:3
David desires to sing His praises among all the nations. The desire we have to get the message to the world is not a new message rather it is the Old message restated and given to the church. David as king desire to sing his praises. How much more should those of us who live in this modern age concern ourselves with praising his name to the nations? We have the full Bible, the indwelling Holy Spirit, and all the modern conveniences. WE must use all that we have to get the gospel to the entire world in our generation. WAG
Psa_111:6
Maybe the reason we do not have His power to the extent we wish is that we do not the right motives. What he desires is that we take the heathen for our inheritance. That does not mean that we are to conquer them but to evangelize them. His power is not a selfish investment on our part but rather to empower us to lift high his name. WAG
Psa_123:2
The relationship that a servant of God should have with the Lord is to put their eyes on the hand of the Lord and watch for the slightest movement to indicate what He would have us to do. It is dangerous as a servant to expect or demand that He, the Lord, raise His voice to cause us to know what He wants from us.
The following comes from JFB on this program and gives a good outline for use as a message.
The servants of God should look (1) to His directing hand, to appoint them their work; (2) to His supplying hand (Ps 104:28), to give them their portion in due season; (3) to His protecting hand, to right them when wronged; (4) to His correcting hand (Isa 9:13; 1Pe 5:6; compare Ge 16:6); (5) to His rewarding hand. Psa_130:1
All over this world there are people crying out to God, out of the depths of their despair they cry out to a God they do not even know. Do you remember how lost and alone you felt before you cried out for the Lord to save you? Do you remember the weight of this world being lifted from your shoulders when the Lord reached out His nail scared hand and brought you from where you were to where you are now? Are we simple too busy to hear anyone’s cry but our own. Let us cry out of the depths of our heart for God to use us to reach this world.

Psa_132:5
David said that he would not go to his house, nor to his bed, nor sleep until he had found a place for the Lord. Psa_132:2-4. Can you imagine someone so consumed with the Lord and His benefit that they would limit themselves and their family for His cause? I challenge you to realize that today He desires that we be so consumed with getting His gospel to the entire world. In the New Testament I believe that Paul was just that consumed. He was passionate about getting the gospel to the world. Decide today that what He wants is more important than your house or family. That what He wants should even steal our sleep. Let's take His gospel to the world. WAG
Psa_138:4
If they were to but hear the words of His mouth they would praise Him. The problem is that they do not hear. We do not tell. We do not send His gospel to the world. Was this simply David's faith or is it a veiled promise to. I believe and have seen that when "they" hear "they" respond. God opens doors. His Word is power and changes lives. We must take on us the burden of getting to work about our Father's business of getting the gospel message to the world. WAG
Psa_147:15
His word runneth swiftly. I think that it should be our concern to see to it that God’s word run through out the earth. That seems to have been the concern of the psalmist—the Jews the people of God sang that. Shouldn’t we. Paul echoes that same thought in the New Testament when he says II Thessalonians 3:1. WAG |
