An Overview of Riyadh
Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia. In addition to being the country’s largest city, it is also is one of the richest cities in the Middle East and part of the 100 Richest Cities in the world. Riyadh is located in the center of the Arabian Peninsula and is home to over 5 million people.
Because it is the capital city, Riyadh has a diverse population base that is 60% Saudi and 40% foreign (mainly from India, Bangladesh, the Philippines, and surrounding countries). The area has a distinctive dialect called Najdi Arabic that is widely spoken throughout Central and Eastern Saudi Arabia. Riyadh’s secondary language is English.
Religion in Riyadh
Like most other Middle Eastern countries, the Islamic religion is supreme and dictates every area of life. Riyadh boasts of 4,300+ mosques and a Sunni majority. Most of Saudi Arabia’s laws and customs are dictated by Islam and enforced by the government’s religious police, the Mutaween. It is illegal to be a non-Muslim citizen.
