Today’s reading Matthew 1-4
Matthew 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
The Pharisees and the Sadducees came to see John baptizing. John cried out harshly that they should flee from the wrath to come. He told them to bring forth fruit that proved that they had really repented. He told them that they could not depend on their heritage to make them right with God.
Amazingly John was harsh with the religious leaders because they thought they were in good shape. He called them out because they thought that their good works were good enough. They thought that their religion and their heritage would be all that was needed in their relationship with God.
John called them to repentance. It is so easy to rest in religion and think everything is alright. You will have all the trappings but no real salvation. Religion is a trap that will destroy you. It will lull you to sleep. It will cause you to feel good about what you are doing or what men say without bringing you to see your sin and need of a Savior.
Just because you walk the walk, dress the dress, attend the meetings, follow through on all the rituals don’t believe that you are saved and that everything is right with God.
We all come to Him helpless to receive a gift that He paid for. We do not earn it. It is a gift made possible by His grace and mercy!
