Any president can have a series of events turn against him in such a way that his approval rating drops dramatically, and such has been the case for Sebastián Piñera of Chile. In 2019, Chile’s streets were aflame with protests that eventually turned into riots over the raising of public transportation fares and other social issues. Then in 2020 and beyond, the president found himself trying to navigate the COVID pandemic. Needless to say, his approval rating isn’t where he’d like it to be.
So perhaps it shouldn’t have come as such a big surprise to his supporters when Piñera suddenly announced last week that he favors same-sex marriage being legalized in Chile (On an interesting note regarding marriage, Chile only just legalized divorce in 2004 and was the last country in South America to do so.) Perhaps he believes Chileans are beginning to favor this position on the issue and wants to salvage his reputation, or maybe he truly has had a change of heart himself. Still, whatever his reason, Piñera announced on June 1st, “I think the time for equal marriage has come in our country…All people, regardless of their sexual orientation, will be able to live, love, and form a family with all the protection and dignity they need and deserve.” He also stated, “I think we should deepen the value of freedom, including the freedom to love and to form a family with a loved one. Also the value of the dignity of all relationships of love and affection between two people.”
It’s interesting to note that he arbitrarily picks the number “two” for how many should be involved in a marriage, and also that his last statement about “all relationships of love and affection between two people” basically opens the door for pedophilia. When a person begins to deviate from the design God gave for marriage and the family, disastrous consequences occur.
It’s also a sad thing to note that, when one reads through the Bible, the approval of sodomy was one of the major characteristics God pointed out about a nation that was rebelling against Him. He said in I Kings 14, “And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done. For they also built them high places, and images, and groves, on every high hill, and under every green tree. And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the Lord cast out before the children of Israel.”
Whatever the future holds for marriage in Chile, one thing is certain: Chileans need to hear the gospel before it’s too late for their souls. Will you pray that God will raise up laborers who will tell them of the one true Savior, Jesus Christ? Will you be that laborer yourself?
