Today’s reading Jeremiah 39-42

Jeremiah 42:6 Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God, to whom we send thee; that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the LORD our God.

The people come to Jeremiah and tell him that they want to know God’s will. They will follow God’s will they say. They will do what ever God wants them to do whether it is pleasant or unpleasant. They want to obey God and they want God’s blessings.

That sure sounds like wonderful words from God’s people. But the truth is that they did not want to obey and they do not plan to obey and they will not obey.

When Jeremiah comes back and tells them what God wants they will reply, we will not obey!

How much does that sound like us? We claim that we want to serve God but not really. We act spiritual but live carnal.

We will obey God as long as what He wants fits our schedule. What we really want is God to bless us but not to ask anything of us.

Are you guilty of making empty promises to the Lord? Do you claim to want to obey and serve while in your heart reserving the right to decide whether or not you will? Do you determine to do what God wants only if it pleases you and is in line with your will?
