Earlier this week, the Peruvian Congress impeached President Martin Vizcarra due to his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and alleged corruption. Congress claims that Vizacarra’s poor management of the virus has helped lead to the death of 35,000 Peruvians.
Despite Congress’s decision, 80% of the people support Vizcarra as president. Therefore, moments after the decision, many Peruvians, who oppose the impeachment, surrounded Congress in Lima as police prepared for the escalation of unrest and riots.
Manual Merino was appointed interim president but stepped down after only 5 days as head of state due to violent protests that resulted in two deaths. The Peruvian Congress is holding an emergency session to replace Merino. The next president will be Peru’s fifth in 5 years.
While the country continues to struggle with the effects of the virus and is now in the midst of what could become a political crisis, many are looking for hope and peace! Yet, so many still do not realize that peace and hope cannot be found in this world, in a president, or in a healthcare system. They can only be found in Christ and a relationship with Him as their personal savior!
Peru is in desperate need of the gospel! Would you pray for more laborers? Would you take the gospel to a people desperately searching for hope amid the trials and tribulations of this world?
“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
