On Friday, January 29, 2020, Portugal’s parliament voted to allow euthanasia for terminally ill patients. The lawmaker called the approval of the bill “a democratic answer to fundamentalism.”
The law will go into effect after the President gives it his stamp of approval. The timing of this law has been criticised as so many are being affected by COVID-19.
Even though Portugal is a Catholic-majority country, it has made several liberal reforms recently, legalizing abortion in 2007 and same-sex marriage in 2010.
